The Sennheiser HD 58X Jubilee and the Beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO are two very good critical listening open-back headphones but shine in different categories. If you care more about comfort and build quality, the Beyerdynamic will be a better option. On the other hand, sound-wise, the Sennheiser are slightly better and have less harmonic distortion, but this might not be audible for most. I since then decided to buy a Magni 3+/Modi 3 Schiit stack and want to take advantage of the power output capable of these two devices. I was wondering if upgrading to a DT 1770 250Ohm would be worth the hike in price from the DT 770 250Ohm. The DT 770 250Ohm i can get for $160 compared to the DT 1770’s being $430 currently.
The 990 has higher highs in particular. To me this made it sound sibilant (/ harsh) and was the main reason for the sale. It's a bit more open - the soundstage is better, but imaging is comparable from one to the other. The 880 has smoother treble and a better low end (but neither model excels here).
